AWS GetIT Competition
We are delighted that our students won this year’s AWS GetIT app competition against such tough competition. Taking part in the AWS GetIT programme has been eye-opening and inspirational, particularly for the students to see just how much technology feeds into all careers, and how much more there is to the technology industry - it's not just coding!
The students also learned a lot of soft skills such as working as a team, problem-solving, and responding to data and feedback. We had a former student, Cat Reid, as our AWS GetIT Ambassador and mentor, and the students really appreciated her support and encouragement throughout the process.
AWS GetIT is a programme that is designed to inspire young people (particularly girls) to consider a future in STEM. The AWS GetIT competition asked participants to create an app that would solve a real-world problem.
Our team of five Upper 4 students submitted an app that was aimed at helping people with specific dietary requirements to find somewhere to eat. They called their app “Food 4 U” and they presented their wireframe and design concepts, guided by their mentor, to the panel of judges.
Competing against over a hundred other teams, the girls used foundational skills in tech, problem-solving and teamwork to take the top spot. We are incredibly proud of their achievement, and we look forward to being involved with this competition again next year.
Congratulations to the team!
