Junior School: A Dance with Cameron

On World Book Day, we had an author visit from Emily Dodd. She read us her book, Can’t Dance Cameron. The story was about a capercaillie named Cameron, who struggled with dancing. As he met various Scottish animals in the forest, he eventually learned how to dance.

We also learned how to dance like a capercaillie ourselves, which was really funny! Emily taught us about the different animals in the story and even showed us a video of her cat.

After break time, we had a parade around the playground where we got to see everyone’s costumes. There were so many creative outfits representing book characters.

Mrs Phebus organised a treasure hunt for us. We had to find pictures of book covers hidden around the Junior School. Each cover had a number and letter circled, helping us crack the secret code.

We had a wonderful World Book Day!

Lower School: Literary Fun at Merchiston

On Thursday, 6th March, it was World Book Day. The whole of Lower School was invited to Merchiston to take part in an author’s visit and lots of fun activities. Many people had made a huge effort to dress up as book characters, even the teachers! Miss Ely and Mr Walker came as trees from The Lorax—they looked amazing with their huge pink hair.

When we arrived at Merchiston, we went into the hall and were split into groups. We listened to author Justin Davies, who talked about villains and heroes, and then we created our own villain. After that, we made a map and a story together. It was great fun!

My favourite activity was the dingbats, where you had to guess a well-known phrase from a picture. There were other activities too, such as guessing the title of a book from its cover and decoding a message. Prizes were awarded to the group that scored the most points.

The most incredible part of the day was seeing the actual car that was used in some of the Harry Potter films.

A big thank you to Merchiston for hosting us and making World Book Day so enjoyable. And thanks to Ms Elder and Miss Taylor for all their hard work in making the day happen.

Upper School: Literary Challenges & Mysteries

This year, for World Book Day, we had a Literary Pairs challenge, where teachers wore badges with the names of well-known book characters. It was incredibly fun to track down all the teachers, figure out which book their characters came from, and work out which characters were paired together. The winner was the person who found the most pairs.

I really hope this challenge continues every year as it's such a fun way to celebrate World Book Day. Plus, the lovely prize makes it all the more exciting! I received a book token for winning the challenge, and I can’t wait to use it to read some amazing books.

We also had a thrilling murder mystery game, where we had to go on a scavenger hunt around the school to find clues. Solving the mystery was so satisfying, and I hope we have something like this again for next year's World Book Day—it was a delightful surprise and made the day even more exciting!
