Digi Club: Preparing for a Spooky Coding Competition

In Digi Club, we are working towards a coding competition. We have to code and create a monster-themed Hallowe'en project. We are very excited about our coding projects and are looking forward to submitting our work in November. We cannot wait to submit our work!

Hike to Scald Law

On the 27th of September, Primary 5 went on a hike to Scald Law, which is one of the biggest hills in the Pentland Hills. Before we went on the trip, we looked up Scald Law on Google Maps and we marked the route and carried our own maps. We went on the school minibus. It was a very windy day but not that muddy. It was also slippery on the rocks in particular. We saw beautiful streams and valleys. There were a lot of sharp, jagged plants. There were many big, black beetles too. Mr Dunlop came with us as he is a mountain leader. We saw a reservoir, a bridge, swans, sheep and ducks along the way and some dogs too. We sat down in the foothills of Scald Law to eat our lunch. For lunch, we had fruits, sandwiches, crisps and Kit Kats.

The climb was reasonably tough and we had to be careful not to be on the edges. You also had to take care when stepping on small loose rocks. We liked jumping in the bushes and grass. As the walk was quite hard, sitting down for breaks felt amazing! At the end of the hike, we took a picture at the highest point of Scald Law and we all jumped for an 'action photo'. We were lucky to have a sunny day and the teachers on our side! We really enjoyed spending the day away from school in the beautiful outdoors.

Maths Week

On European Day of Languages, which fell during Maths Week, the Primary 5s undertook an exciting project for the Junior School. We carried out a survey to find out the languages that our junior school students spoke at home. First, we were split into groups of Nursery, P1, P2, P3, P4, P5X and P5Y. Next, we had to go to these classes and ask the students and the teachers which languages they spoke. We found out that being organised and asking the correct questions were quite important! We kept a tally chart to record the information.

It was amazing to find out the variety of languages spoken such as Japanese, French, Spanish, Greek, Urdu and Chinese, not to mention English! After collecting this information, we came back to our classroom, and we entered this information on an Excel spreadsheet. We had the choice to present this information as a bar chart, pie chart, doughnut chart or a line chart. Doughnut chart and pie charts were very popular choices. We are going to share the information we have found with the class teachers and with Mrs Nettleton and Mrs Buchanan. We really enjoyed working on this project.

Our favourite part was going to different classes and collecting information. Maths Week was so much fun and helped us develop teamwork, which is an important metaskill.
