UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge

On January 29th several of our Upper School students took part in the UKMT Intermediate Mathematical Challenge.

The Challenge is a 60-minute, multiple-choice paper which encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems. The problems on the Intermediate Mathematical Challenge are designed to make students think. Most are accessible, yet still challenge those with more experience.

All participants have received a certificate of participation. To recognise the highest performers in the Challenge, the top-scoring 50% of participants are awarded Bronze, Silver and Gold certificates. Students that are 'Best in Year' or 'Best in School' have also received a badge to denote this on their certificates.

We congratulate Emma, Emilia, Laya (U4), Dany, Isabel, Isabella, Isobel, Isla, Rachel, Sophia, Vibhuti, Zara (L5), Caitlin, Heiley, Mariam, Rachael and Sahana (U5) on their Bronze certificate;

Isla (U4), Chimdalu, Linbo and Ziyu (L5) on their Silver certificate;

Claire, Emmie (L5) and Clara (U5) on their Gold certificate.

Clara, being a top-scorer, was also invited to take part in the follow-on competition Pink Kangaroo.

UKMT Team Maths Challenge

On the 19th of March 2025, four students from St George’s, Connie (L4), Rija (L4), Alina (U4), Shiuli (U4) took part in the UKMT Team Maths Challenge held in Loretto School, competing against fourteen other teams.

Participating in the UKMT Team Maths Challenge was a lovely experience where I used my maths skills and learned teamwork. Solving problems with others showed me the value of communication and working together. The event was fun, competitive, and taught me skills I'll use in the future. We enjoyed learning different skills through the group round, relay round, cross number puzzle and the shuttle round.

During the various rounds, we used our skills of communication and teamwork to solve problems by deciding which questions we would solve first and helping each other when we got stuck. I believe we grew closer as a group since we shared this experience.
I thoroughly recommend trying out UKMT maths challenges as they help you develop many useful skills and test your limits. I will try them again in the future.
