Laura Buchanan began her teaching career in East Renfrewshire Council in August 2007. In 2013, she was appointed Principal Teacher at St John's Primary School, where she played a key role in various initiatives, including parental involvement, probationary mentoring, and leading the Pupil Council and Eco Committee.
In 2016, Laura transitioned into the role of Acting Depute Head Teacher, where she focused on key areas such as Child Protection, Additional Support Needs (ASN), Digital Technology, Health and Wellbeing, Assessment and Moderation, and Child-Led Pedagogy. Alongside this, she successfully managed the authority’s Outreach Support Service.
After relocating from Glasgow to Edinburgh in 2019, Laura joined Fife Council as Deputy Head Teacher at Carnegie Primary School. In this role, she was responsible for curriculum development, tracking and attainment, as well as pastoral care for Primary 5, 6, and 7 students in a large, dynamic school setting. Throughout her career, Laura has taught across all stages of primary education.
In August 2022, Laura took on the role of Deputy Head of Junior School at St George's School, where she has led the Junior School to achieve Silver Rights Respecting School status. She is passionate about empowering pupils through the effective use of pupil voice, fostering an environment where students feel valued and heard.
