Qualifications
Sonia began her teaching career at Newcastle upon Tyne Church High School in 1996 as a teacher of Geography, before relocating to Edinburgh to join the Geography department at St George’s in 1999. Sonia’s interest in identifying and teaching students with specific learning difficulties led to her appointment as Co-ordinator of Learning Support, and then as Head of Learning Support, before she left us in 2003 to take on the role of Education Officer at the National Institute for Intellectual Disability, Trinity College Dublin. St George’s saw Sonia return in 2005, and she became Head of Faculty of Support for Learning, and in 2008 Head of Qualifications and Assessment. Sonia joined the Senior Leadership Team as a Deputy Head in 2015, where she is now the Deputy Head: Academic.
Her work with students who have additional support needs continues to inspire Sonia and she also enjoys supporting students in their applications for competitive courses at universities in the United Kingdom and overseas. She also takes up opportunities to return to Geography teaching whenever possible.
Sonia was appointed as an Associate Assessor with Education Scotland (Her Majesty’s Inspectorate) in 2015.
